The UAE has recently stepped up censorship, forcing all web browsing through a proxy to block 'sites not consistent with the moral and cultural values of the UAE'. Needless to say, criticism of the country is not consistent with those values, and any blogs or news sites critical of the UAE are blocked too. Furthermore, both ISPs (which are government controlled, and retain their monopolies) block VOIP traffic to force people to pay their extortionate overseas call fees. Calls from outside the country to a UAE number are also obscenely expensive (15 times the price of a call from Europe to USA, a similar distance). StrongVPN is a life saver.
